Cost:$8,840 per person sharing  (includes all meals, accommodations, volcano hike, gorilla trek, gorilla permits, all local connecting flights and all road transfers). 

Physical rating: 7/10 for the volcano hike and 5/10 for the Gorilla trekking. You must have decent cardio fitness to do the volcano hike. It's a 5 hour hike vertically up the volcano. If you feel yo are not fit enough to complete the hike, you will have the option of turning back and we can book you into a partner hotel for the night.

This trip will include spectacular hiking up an active volcano, camp out at the top with stunning views of the molten lava below. Be prepared for a truly authentic African experience rich in culture and stunning volcanic terrains as we journey through this land before time.


21 June: Depart JNB for Rwanda

22 June: Volcano Overnight Trek

At 5.00am you will be picked up for the Volcano Trek located on the Congo/Rwanda border (approx. 3-4 hour drive). Dinner and overnight at the Summit. All meals and snacks provided. This is a spectacular hike with overnight camping in simple wooden cabins on the top rim of the volcano with stunning views of the molten lava below.

23 June: Volcano Trek descent

At 6am you will start your descent with your guide. You will reach town around 11.00am and then will be driven to our luxury Gorilla Trekking lodge boasting spectacular views of the surrounding volcanic landscape. The rest of the day can be spent relaxing and being entertained by the locals (approx. drive time to lodge 2 hours). 

24 June: Gorilla trekking

Early in the morning you will depart with your guides for your gorilla trek. Your Trek will meander through enchanting bamboo forests on the slopes of the Virunga range of volcanoes. After a gentle climb of between one and three hours, you will spend one hour in the company of a family of gorillas before returning to base in time for a late lunch. Some gorilla families can be more elusive, and tracking can take a full day, especially if it is wet and muddy.

25 June: Free day

Today choose from one of the optional activities:

  • Go for a second gorilla trek (additional permits required at $1,500 per person)

  • Trek to the grave of pioneer primatologist Dian Fossey and visit the gorilla cemetery, the final resting place of her favorite gorilla, Digit, and many other gorillas.

  • Visit Lake Kivu, location of the finest inland beaches in Africa.

  • Take a guided walk to Lake Bulera, to experience village life.

  • Tour the former Imbabazi Orphanage and beautiful English cottage gardens.

In the evening before dinner you will experience the local Intore dancers for a spectacular 30min show of local dancing and story telling.

26 June: Genocide Memorial

Today you will enjoy a city tour and a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial. A visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial is a moving testimony to this country’s past that it has courageously overcome (guests to pay/donate entrance fees directly).

27 June: Departure day
